What are appliances?

Appliances are essentially electrical or mechanical devices that make our lives easier by helping us with various household tasks.

These tasks can range from cleaning and cooking to preserving food.

There are different ways to categorize appliances, but a common one is by size:

• Major appliances (also known as white goods): These are typically larger and more expensive appliances, like refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers.

• Small appliances: These are generally countertop appliances or handheld devices, and are less expensive than major appliances. Examples include toasters, microwaves, coffee makers, blenders, and vacuum cleaners.

Consumer electronics, like TVs and computers, are sometimes included under the appliance umbrella, but they are often referred to separately as brown goods.
